the fiscal cliff. happy new year. here's what you might have missed. president obama left hawaii early to get back to washington today. the senate is also coming back from christmas vacation today to work on a deal. now, sources tell us majority leader harry reid will push a scaled-back version of the fiscal cliff package that president obama laid out on friday, which moved the tax hike needle to $400,000. no word yet on when the house of representatives might come back, but democrats say the only hope we have of something getting through the house, the senate and the white house may be a very last-minute deal. cnn radio's lisa is following developments on capitol hill right now. the ball is in senate majority leader harry reid's court it would seem right now, lisa. >> that's right. harry reid and the senate seem to be the only game in town right now with the senate returning today. we also know from sources, ali, that over this christmas break there were no conversations between the president and top-level republicans. sources from both parties are telling us they are watching the senate, es

the effects of the cliff on january 4 when the new congress is in town. >> if america does fall off the fiscal cliff, maryland would be hit hard. hundreds of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs lost. sarah sampson continue our coverage. >> maryland has very strong ties to the federal government. lots of federal workers and businesses that rely on the federal workers. all of them are keeping a close eye on negotiations. according to a report earlier this year by the state department of legislative services, maryland stands to lose 53,000 jobs in 2013 if lawmakers cannot come to an agreement. the state will also lose tax revenue estimated at about $260 million for 2013. if the cuts go through, the state will lose $117 million in federal funding for 2013. that is money the state has already factored into its budget. >> it is gone to affect social service programs -- it is going to affect social service programs as well as some of our defense contractors in maryland. it is going to adversely impact our low income households as well as some of our higher and households. >> the first t

. that's the fiscal cliff. we reach the brink in two days. let's go live now to dana bash on capitol hill. because of news of a setback. dana, what do we know? >> that's right. we got this word from democratic sources about a half an hour ago. maybe a little bit more. that they consider a major setback to be going on right now. a poison pill, something that the republicans offered last night and democrats rejected today. it's called technically chain cpi, the buzz word for it. what it means for real people and real terms, would be that social security recipients would see smaller checks on a monthly basis and that's why democrats are saying that this is a nonstarter. the president did propose this to the house speakers as part of a larger deal. he even talked about it again this morning on nbc, the president. but democrats are saying that they simply do not see this in this miner, smaller mini deal. they don't want to deal with the entitlement issue at all until a later date when they can deal with it in a broad sense. here's an example of what we heard a half hour ago from the republican
